Acting Opportunity
Charleston Stage Company is looking to cast the role of a 50 yr old Iraqi woman. This is an amazing monologue for the right person. It is simultaneously emotionally gripping, terrifying and beautiful. The play opens March 31st and runs two consecutive weekends Thur-Sat. If you are, or someone you know, is interested here is Tim's e-mail address: timmace1964@netscape.net
Michelle Bowers (ubu34@aol.com) will be happy to get interested persons a copy of the monologue asap.
Here is a review: An Iraqi Mother, a woman whose own personal experiences in modern-day Iraq have cost her not only the lives of her husband and children, but her own life as well.
Married to the head of the Iraqi communist party, she and her children were arrested in the early days of Saddam Hussein's American-backed regime and tortured (in the palace that gives this play its name) in an attempt to force them to divulge the hiding place of their husband and father.
Although the character, inspired by Nehrjas al-Saffarh, survives the torture, she is killed in an explosion during Desert Storm and now her ghost watches over Baghdad, waiting, perhaps in vain, for the day when her people will control their own country.
